1971 Born in Freiburg, Germany on 20 August. 1971-88 Childhood in Staufen, in the Breisgau region of southwest Germany. 1986 Introduced to photography by his father. 1987 First (still unreleased) series of portraits taken during a school trip to Munich. 1988-91 Apprenticeship as Haute Cuisine Hotel Manager at the Colombi Hotel Freiburg. Completes his training with distinction. 1991-94 Moves to London. Works at the Four Seasons Hotel, Leading Hotels of the World. 1994-95 Civilian service at the Goethe Institute, Mannheim. 1995-96 Obtains entrance qualification for technical college from Walter Eucken Gymnasium, Freiburg. 1996 Moves back to his adopted home of London. 1996-99 Study at the University of the Arts (London College of Communication). Bachelor of Arts degree in Marketing & Advertising. 2003 Co-founds Photodebut (international collective of emerging photography artists) along with Richard Mosse, Michelle Sank, Aaron Schumann, Esther Teichmann, Jan von Holleben and others. 2003-10 Photodebut exhibitions in London. 2003 Home is where (Four Corners Gallery) 2004 It went dark and I saw (Well Gallery) 2006 Petites morts (Glasshouse Gallery) 2006 Stop moving (mobile exhibition) 2010 Why I love photography (Host Gallery) 2004 Near-death experience while aboard a boat on the Andaman Sea in Thailand during the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami. His story appears on the BBC and in The Guardian. 2004-17 Travels in Bali, Borneo, Cambodia, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, resulting in the portrait series Urak Lawoi (People of the Sea), which explores themes of community and salvation arising from his near-death experience in the region. 2004-05 Begins the photographic work Last Stop Routemasters, a documentary series portraying the final year of London’s iconic red double-decker bus, the Routemaster. 2007 Images from the Urak Lawoi series appear in the UNESCO publication The Urak Lawoi of the Adang Archipelago. 2007-14 Co-founds the legendary queer East London party series GutterSlut, which he documents through multiple photo series including Beautiful Freaks. 2007 First GutterSlut party in London. 2008 Last Stop Routemasters (Breedon Books, UK) photography book published. 2008 Last Stop Routemasters solo exhibition at the London Transport Museum. 2008 The British Library archives Last Stop Routemasters into the permanent archive on behalf of National Heritage. 2008 Last Stop Routemasters appears in the illustrated book Cult Masterpieces (Tectum, DE). 2008 Semi-finalist at the Hasselblad Masters Award (Copenhagen) with the portrait “Swedish Wedding Kid”. 2009 Multimedia exhibition Beautiful Freaks in collaboration with Tony Hornecker at Dalston Superstore, London. 2010 Photodebut is dissolved. Final publication, Photodebut: A case study, is published (Photographer's Office, London, UK). 2010 Beautiful Freaks (created in collaboration with Tony Hornecker) is displayed as part of the group exhibition Gender & Performance at the Royal College of Art, London. 2010 Moves to Berlin. Artist Residency with the artist collective Pale Blue Door at Prinzessinnengarten. 2010-13 Hosts GutterSlut events in Berlin. 2012 Opens his studio and gallery in Neukölln with the exhibition Beautiful Freaks. 2012-17 Creates the Berlin studio series Poikas, a project that explores self-confidence and vulnerability often hidden behind the façade of youthful masculinity. 2014 Final GutterSlut event in London. 2016 Hosts a studio exhibition of Urak Lawoi as part of the 48 Stunden Neukölln festival. 2016 Begins the series Jana-Maria & Jakob in Staufen. Through words and images, this project portrays his niece and nephew as they come of age. 2016 Honorable Mention at the International Photography Award (Farmani Group, Los Angeles) with the portrait "Little Drummer" from the Urak Lawoi series. 2017 Studio exhibition of Poikas, accompanied by the publication of a limited-edition artist book with selections from the series (self-published). 2017 Forced to close studio and exhibition space in Neukölln in response to increased gentrification of the neighbourhood. 2018-23 Creates Berliner Icons, a conceptual art project produced in collaboration with Steffi Weiss. The series focuses on the unstoppable, fast-paced change taking place in Berlin. 2019 Hosts the exhibition The end of an Era. Once upon a time in Glebe Road in collaboration with Tony Hornecker. The exhibition documents the life, work and events of artist collectives Pale Blue Door and GutterSlut, who worked and lived in East London’s Glebe Road. 2019-20 Creates the series Youthhood for ze.tt (Die Zeit). The series portrays young people (aged 17-21) living in Berlin in words and pictures and deals with themes related to growing up in the city. 2020 Pictures from the series Beautiful Freaks appear in New Queer Photography (Verlag Kettler, DE), the award-winning photography book edited by Benjamin Wolbergs. 2021 Produced Ascension, a short film by Antonio Urquillo and Jean-Marc Joseph, which features a 13-year-old boy (Jakob Obergfell) from the Black Forest and tells a story about fear of change, learning to observe instead of seeing, and learning to listen instead of hearing. 2022 New Queer Photography exhibition at Galerie fhochdrei - Freiraum für Fotografie, Berlin. 2023 Berlin Icons & Heim@tlos exhibition in collaboration with Steffi Weiss and Raidar Huber as part of the European Month of Photography (EMOP) at Galerie Strassenfeger, Berlin. The exhibition included an artist talk with Gudrun Gut. 2023 Ascension wins multiple awards and prizes at international film festivals, including Dubai Independent Film Festival, Hawaii International Film Awards, Tokyo Short Film Festival, Barcelona Indie Short Film Festival, Lisboa Indie Short Film Festival amongst others. 2024 The unabridged Beautiful Freaks series goes on exhibit as part of the Love, Lust and Freedom group exhibition, Kunstmuseum Brandts, Odense, Denmark.
